[Bandung] Katjapiring

on our second day in Bandung, we decided to go to Paris Van Java, a famous shopping mall in Bandung.. we went there quite early that only a few stores opened, so there's not many choices for breakfast.. on our way looking around the mall, we spotted a nice-decorated restaurant, called Katjapiring, which offers Malaysian and peranakan cuisine.. it was decorated in an old China eatery, kinda brought us back to past..

on the night before, I didn't have enough sleep since the five of us were too busy sharing stories and catching up with each other.. I felt a little sleepy so I decided to have iced kopi tarik (Rp14,500).. I need some caffeine to survive haha.. it tasted just fine.. standard coffee with milk haha.. I didn't expect something too special anyway..

I was quite hungry back then, so I ordered a portion of Nasi Lemak (Rp10,000).. it came in a small portion, just the way I would have for breakfast.. once I opened the leave, it was filled with rice and the toppings (peanuts, boiled egg, salt fish and shredded chicken) were just too little for the amount of rice that I didn't finish my rice.. the toppings were dominated with peanuts, so it was like eating rice and peanuts only.. quite disappointing for me..

my friends ordered Mie Siam (Rp11,000).. just like nasi lemak, it came in a small portion.. I got the chance to try a little of it and it was good, especially the chili accompanying haha.. it tasted rather sour but nice, in my opinion.. a friend of mine didn't like it though.. well, I guessed it tasted quite unique that not everybody will like it..

what's the point of eating at a peranakan restaurant without trying the kaya toast? still, as a part of our breakfast, a big one I supposed, we decided to order Kaya Toast (Rp11,000) to share.. to our disappointment, it was butter-toasted bread with a small portion of kaya jam.. I think we can make it at home by ourselves..

overall.. I guess I wouldn't be coming back.. the food I've tasted didn't impress my taste buds.. it was disappointment after disappointment.. I think the restaurant should improve their menu and service.. oh, once we placed our order, the waiter brought us a small portion of free crackers.. I supposed it should be treated as waiting snacks.. once my friend asked for more (we were five hungry girls), the waiter told us that if we want to add more, we have to pay Rp5,000.. it was too much for a small portion of crackers.. so, again, I think I'll prefer eating somewhere else..

[Bandung] Mie Naripan

traveling to Bandung means good food and great shopping.. especially when the journey is shared with college friends who we haven't seen for a while.. so there we were.. five talkative girls traveled together in a rented Kijang Inova.. this means a journey full of gossips, laughter and so much fun (poor you, driver).. it was a two-day trip, too short but I really enjoy every second of it :) we rented a car to pick us in Jakarta, travel to Bandung and go around Bandung, then deliver us back to Jakarta, the next day..

we started our journey quite early, so our first stop in Bandung was Mie Naripan to have some breakfast.. I heard that it was quite famous in Bandung and Jakarta, serving mainly noodles.. it was established in 1965, much older than me ya? I ordered a portion of mie yamien pangsit rebus - yamien noodle with dumplings (around Rp25,000).. yamien noodle is noodle mixed with sweet soy sauce, giving a unique and nice taste in your tongue.. actually, here you can choose between the sweet soy sauce or salty soy sauce, but I prefer the sweet one.. it brought me back to college days, when the five of us used to order each a portion of yamien noodle from our cafeteria and it tasted really delicious and was very cheap.. we also decided to order three pieces of bakso goreng - fried pork meatballs (around Rp3,000 each) to accompany our noodle..

the noodle came in a big portion, with generous minced pork on top of it.. it was chewy and nice, not overcooked.. I think the noodle was homemade.. the sweetness level was enough and just right, the way I would've like :) add a little chili sauce, then you have one perfect bowl of sweet noodle with pork.. I have to give a special credit to the dumplings since it was really delicious.. if I'm not mistaken, it was filled with a mix of shrimp and pork, but I'm not too sure haha.. the fried pork meatballs were just okay for me, nothing was special and I had better.. overall, it was a huge breakfast.. but delicious, I must say.. just a perfect way to start the trip in Bandung :D

Bandung & Puncak Weekend Getaway

on August 14-15, 2010, I had a weekend gateway to Bandung and Puncak with my high schoolmates :) a lovely trip with lots of laughters, foods, sharing.. I really really love it.. I think I'm addicted to it :P and what makes me happier is that our trip didn't make us bangkrupt, whatsoever.. it's a trip I would suggest to all of you having tight budget :)

first, we spent the night in Puncak where my friend owned a villa.. so, no cost for hotel.. wallet and money is safe and sound :) happy me.. second, we were travelling with my friend's car and a very nice friend of mine was willing to drive all the way.. so no cost for car rental and driver tips :) another happy me.. our shared cost (fuel, car park, tips, shared snacks and other stuffs) was Rp100k each.. there were 7 of us anyway.. so if you're travelling with fewer people means that cost per person is higher..

however, there is one problem.. one of my friend is a food-freak.. so he keep on telling us where to eat.. and since it's not often for us to travel together, we would agree and eat in any restaurant we found.. but then again, it's your choice to eat or not to eat.. so the cost for food is subject to each person's preference.. overall, the greediest friend of mine spent a total of Rp350k (include the Rp100k shared cost) during our trip..

now, here comes the food story :) prepare to drool.......

when we arrived, we were so hungry.. and my friend suggested us to eat in 'Nasi Timbel Dago' then continue to Prima Rasa.. another friend said that near Prima Rasa, there's a very nice 'mie kocok'.. so I prefer to try the 'mie kocok'.. in Nasi Timbel Dago, we ordered tahu telor petis (Rp17k) to share.. well, it's basically a mixed of fried tofu and egg with petis and peanut sauce.. well, my mom can make something exactly like this, so I'm not impressed.. but my friends are crazy about it.. well, it's personal taste I guessed :) and it was a large portion..

once we had finished our lunch, we continue to Prima Rasa in Jalan Kemuning.. and our mie kocok was closed due to the fasting period.. huhuhuhu.. how sad.. and I haven't had my lunch.. well, near Prima Rasa, we spotted a hawker Siomay Tulen.. another friend of mine said that it was quite good.. so off to the siomay.. costed for Rp3.5k each.. I had one potato, one tofu and two siomays.. tasted really really good.. it was quite expensive but it's really big and worth the taste :)

after shopping for food and snacks and stop by at Bawean Cakery.. we continue to shop :) well, we headed to Rumah Mode to see some stuffs.. I got myself a dress and a shirt.. I am weak at clothes, so do forgive me.. it's my biggest expense during the trip.. while the girls were off to shopping, the boys are resting in the canteen where my friend eat mie kocok.. I was too full to order another food, so I decided to order something refreshing like lime juice (Rp19k).. and it was GREAT.. such a refreshment in a hot afternoon.. then we continue to Paris Van Java since I have not visited it ever before.. so my friends pity me.. huhuhu.. the mall was designed really nice.. I love the big hall where we can walk and see around then took some pictures :)

Next, off to dinner... well, time do flies in Bandung.. we decided to have dinner in Warung Lela.. since it was highly recommended.. I had mie yamin manis bakso (Rp10k) and strawberry juice (Rp9k).. and it was really good.. really really good.. it's the only food that I'm able to finish one full portion.. I LOVE IT.. four thumbs up for Warung Lela.. :)

our food journey was not ended yet.. we continue to Maja House.. a new restaurant and lounge near Sapu Lidi.. it has a very nice ambience and offers a spacious area.. Bandung's night air and wind was perfect that we chose to sit in the balcony.. I chose something light and warm to drink, which was English Breakfast Tea (Rp12.5k).. I think it's quite cheap remembering the atmosphere and view we got.. gonna try their food and other drinks some other time.. but I am definitely addicted to it :) um, they also provided a function hall for wedding, in case you're interested..

we had finished our night talk in Maja House on 10 p.m and directly headed to Puncak.. it was 12 a.m when we arrived at the villa.. most of us had slept during the trip, except for my driving friend and the navigator :) thanks to them.. and our food journey still continued.. ahahah.. my friends are crazy.. we had our late night meal at Warung Shinta and had a big meal, including Sate Ayam and Sate Kambing (Rp32k/10 pieces), Sop Buntut, Hot Orange Juice (Rp8k) and we were given free hot tea.. I was going to order a portion of porridge, but they run out of it.. bad day for my food choices.. so instead I had a cup of hot orange juice and pick some of my friends' food :) I heard their sate kambing was really delicious, but I didn't give it a try.. the sate ayam was really fat.. and full of meat, not the skinny ones we find in Jakarta.. quite expensive, but then again, it was worth the taste and portion :) Warung Shinta managed to keep their original taste and service :)

after our late meal, we returned to the villa and had a long, nice chat with some sharing.. I love our conversation and how we can still be friends after all these years.. and I slept at 4.30 a.m ahahah.. I almost didn't sleep.. one thing I noticed is Puncak was not as cold as it used to be.. must be the effect of global warming.. unfortunately I woke up at 9 a.m.. argh.. I dunno why I can't sleep til noon like I used to.. my body seemed to have a natural alarm.. we had indomie as breakfast... you can't resist a warm boiled indomie in one cold morning :)

once my friends are ready, we headed back to Jakarta.. we stopped by at Ponyo for lunch.. it was quite a famous Sundanese restaurant.. we were hungry and ordered a lot of food, as you can see.. costed us a total of Rp300k.. so it's Rp40k each.. okay, we ordered soto buntut bakar, gurame goreng, babat goreng, usus goreng, lidah goreng, karedok, oseng kangkung, bakwan jagung, pepes jamur, pete, sambel dadakan and nasi timbel teri.. haha.. a lot means a lot :) let me highlight our lunch, the nasi timbel teri and sambel dadakan is really delicious.. others are just okay, delicious but not special.. well, my mom is a Sundanese and I had tried these kind of food a lot of time :)

then we stopped by at Melrimba Garden which was a park combined with cafe.. the garden is really beautiful and cost Rp5k each if we wanted to look around.. too bad, it was raining during our trip, so we were not able to finish our walk in the garden.. my friend was craving for jagung bakar.. so we climbed back up to a hawker near Puncak.. we had 5 jagung bakar, 1 pisang bakar, 1 indomie goreng telor kornet, 1 indomie rebus, 1 ovaltine, 3 kopi susu, 1 teh susu and 1 popercis keju.. total of Rp120k.. and i LOVE the popercis.. it's should spelled poffertjes, a food originated from Holland.. and the so called popercis costed for Rp17k only with such a big portion, generous chocolate and cheese.. I'm in love.. okay, forget about diet when you're on vacation..

here's my travelmates posing in Paris Van Java.. from left-right: Reza (happy driver), Lianny (car owner), Vincent (food freak, food map, food demanding), me, Louise (both prepare nothing and enjoy the trip mostly by sleeping in car :P), Karina (villa owner), Richard (navigator).. Love U guys.. let's do it some other time :)
