Lau's Kopitiam

kopitiam is definitely mushrooming all over Jakarta, almost like a trend.. different brand offers different menu.. personally, I perfer kopitiam to  Western coffee shops as a hang out place.. more affordable prices and more Asian culinary menu are definitely the main reasons.. a few weeks ago, I visited Mall Puri Indah then noticed Lau's Kopitiam at one corner.. I have heard about it quite some time, but never got the chance to visit.. so I decided to have afternoon coffee with my mom there.. the place is quite empty when we arrived, simply decorated with wooden chairs with red cushions accessorized by hints of vintage here and there.. 

we ordered a cup of kopi susu (Rp11,304) each and a portion of black fried carrot cake (Rp16,521) to share.. it didn't take long for our orders to arrive (plus one for the service).. the coffee arrived in the cute, vintage cup.. I think almost all kopitiams serve coffee in a similar cup.. the coffee smelled so good and tasted good as well.. my mom, as my coffee expert, loved the coffee.. she preferred her coffee to be unsweetened, simply black and bitter.. I, on the other hand, preferred to add a little sugar, since I can't stand the bitterness of black coffee.. the black fried carrot cake tasted quite good but not outstanding.. the portion was very huge that we had trouble finishing the whole plate.. perhaps I should just stick to their toast selections as fried carrot cake was not really a matching companion for coffee haha..

overall, I think Lau's Kopitiam offers various types of food with a very affordable prices.. good coffee and good tasted food.. this place surely knows what can keep visitors coming..

Ah Mei Cafe

a few weeks ago, my mom and I visited this restaurant in Mall Puri indah, the Ah Mei Cafe.. it was managed by the Banquet Singapore which was the first company to manage a halal food court in Singapore.. now, their outlet has reached all over Singapore with various food courts.. their passion was to bring the well-known Chinese cuisine and peranakan cuisine to a standard labeled 'halal' in Singapore.. Ah Mei Cafe offers not only Chinese-Singapore cuisine, but also Indian food and Malay food.. from the decoration, we can see that they're trying to bring Singapore to Jakarta.. first, they welcome you with a big, blue sign board, written Ah Mei Cafe by Banquet Singapore.. the dining area was divided between smoking and non-smoking..

the dining area was dominated by wooden furniture with a very strong influence from old Chinese era.. the non-smoking room was surrounded by sofa, so we can choose whether to sit in the sofa or the wooden seats.. first you have to come to the counter to order your food and drink and of course, pay for your food.. then you can pick your seats, and the food will be delivered to you.. a semi fast-food restaurant I think..

the walls here was dominated big pictures of Singapore Old Town.. those pictures captured moments of Singapore in the middle of 90s.. you can taste a hint of vintage by looking at those pictures.. on one corner, they put old equipment, such as plates made from can, old radio and other vintage stuff that your mother will know haha..

off to the food, I decided to order ice tea tarik (Rp17,500) while mom ordered hot tea kosong (Rp10,000).. in Singapore, kosong means no sugar added.. so basically hot tea kosong means hot tea with no sugar haha.. seems like I'm repeating my sentence in a different order.. I think the hot tea was overpriced, it's only a small glass of tea anyway, and we were charged for Rp10,000.. the ice tea tarik was just okay, I had better.. so, for the drinks, I don't see any special thing they offer.. or probably I ordered the wrong drinks.. whatever, both were just overpriced drinks..

I ordered char kuey teow (Rp28,500).. kuey teow in Singapore dishes is different than the ones used in Chinese cuisine.. kuey teow here was a little larger and shorter.. it was cooked with seafood (shrimp, oyster), egg, green onion and bean sprout.. I LOVE IT.. it think it's one of the best char kuey teow I've ever tasted.. it cooked well, no overcook and sweet enough.. the fillings was generous and the price was reasonable.. I love it so muchhh :)

my mom ordered nasi briyani with fish curry (Rp32,500).. it was a complete set of nasi briyani, fish curry, pickles and chip.. well, to be honest, I'm not a fan of food from India.. I think it was to full of spices and too overwhelming for my tongue.. I did try the rice, it was nice actually, sort of Indonesian' fried rice, only with raisins in it.. then I tried a sip of the curry, and I don't like it, as expected.. too much taste of cardamom (kapulaga) which was used in most of India cookings.. however, my mom fancied this dish.. she said it was authentic and delicious.. she even was capable to finish the dish haha.. she usually didn't finish her dish due to diet issue..
