Milan

Milan is a humble eatery selling authentic Bangka cuisine.. It's located in a home/office in Greenville, West Jakarta, very near to my house.. There's nothing special about the look of the eatery, simple with basic furniture.. The main attraction here is simply their authentic Bangka cuisine, which has been acknowledge by Mr. Maknyus (read: Bondan Winarno) himself.. Due to its near location to Palembang, cuisine from Bangka are somehow similar with those originated from Palembang.. Despite the similarity, both dishes offered a unique taste in each own way..

I went there with my mom for a Saturday lunch and she is a huge fan of Bangka cuisine.. So I just sit nicely watching her making all of our orders, impulsively.. Here's a list of what we were eating that afternoon:

1. Lakso 6k
This one is Bangka style laksa, consisted of rice noodles drenched in fish broth and coconut milk.. The portion was quite small but I guessed it shown in the price tag.. This dish was very unique and unlike any other.. The rice noodles was tasteless, so you have to eat it together with the broth.. The broth was delicious, tasty and light.. One thing I really like is the soup was not fishy at all.. I love the strong taste of fresh shredded fish, see those yellow powder on top of the rice noodles? That's the shredded fish I'm talking about.. Add their special chili if you like a kick of spiciness..

2. Pempek Bangka (4k for pempek lenjer, 5k for fish skin cake and 7k for pempek kapal selam)
Pempek is one of the most recognized dish from southern Sumatera.. The most popular is those originated from Palembang.. However, pempek from Bangka is definitely stealing the attention as well.. FYI, the main difference between pempek from Bangka and Palembang is in the vinegar.. Pempek from Bangka is served with spicy-sour red vinegar, made from tauco (fermented soybeans), terasi (shrimp paste) and lots of chili.. While pempek from Palembang is served with sweeter brown vinegar, dominated by palm sugar.. Milan's pempek were delicious! Strong fish taste, mixed with the sour-spicy vinegar, it was just heavenly! I really love how the fish taste stood out, and not overpowered by the flour mix.. Yums!

3. Tahu Kok 20k
Popular dish from Bangka, tahu kok or thew fu kok is made from fried tofu filled with fish, then served in a fish broth along with fish balls and fish fingers.. Milan's tahu kok is a good example of how delicious a simple dish can be.. The broth smelled really good and tasted delicate.. The fish used were very fresh, leaving a nice, clean taste.. It's humble yet very refreshing.. Love it!

4. Es Kacang Merah 25k
Generous red beans cooked in sugar, drenched in coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, syrup and shaved ice.. A menu you must not miss.. The red beans were drenched in water overnight to get the soft texture of the red beans, then add sugar and a pinch of salt to get their best flavor..

Naughty Nuri's Warung, Jakarta

Greenville area has grown resembling Muara Karang where you can find almost any type of food around here.. Naughty Nuri's Warung, which was very famous in Bali, has opened their branch.. it was a house turned into restaurant, decorated in Balinese ornaments here and there.. as we arrived, we were welcomed by the main entrance gate in Balinese style.. going further inside, a lot of Bali paintings and piggies ornaments are found around the restaurant.. the restaurant was quite humble with simple wooden chair and tables.. their menu is embedded to a chop board, making a nice, cute touch..

it was their pork ribs (Rp95,000) which became my main reason to visit.. it was one full slab of ribs marinated in sweet sauce.. a little lime juice to enhance the taste and you are set.. it came in quite a huge portion, luckily it was a shared menu.. the meat were very tender as it easily cut from the bones.. grilled well done, but not too much to make it dry, the meat was juicy  and addictive.. the sauce was a bit too sweet for me, but doesn't really influence the whole eating experience..

overall, I guess I have to thank God for letting Naughty Nuri's Warung opened near my neighborhood.. or, perhaps I should regret for it will definitely ruin my diet? :P

Bakmie Aloi

I'm a sucker for noodles.. I don't know why but I always love noodles.. any kind of it.. you name it, thin noodles, curly noodles, la mian, or even the Italian version of noodle (pasta).. haha.. my neighborhood has developed to a culinary heaven.. really, a lot of new restaurants opened like mushrooms.. one of those many is Bakmie Aloi.. it's a noodle chain restaurant originated from Palembang.. in Jakarta, they have previously opened their branch in Grogol, Kelapa Gading and PIK (CMIIW)..

it was located right next to the famous Bakmie Alok.. I came here to have breakfast with my mom.. it was not too crowded that morning, luckily.. the restaurant layout is very simple yet clean and neat.. looking at their menu, we decided to share a portion of complete noodle (bakmi komplit - Rp24,000).. it consisted of Palembang's thin noodle topped with chicken, minced pork, chasiu pork, mushrooms and celery.. actually, you can choose your noodle between the thin one or the wide one.. our noodle was accompanied with a bowl of chicken broth filled with caisim..

before eating, I usually pour a lot of lime juice and chili sauce.. I'm a chili addict, by the way.. the lime juice was very refreshing.. and the noodle, it was great.. if it's pasta, then I'll call it al dente.. it was chewy and not overcooked.. accompanied with those toppings and I'm happy.. just like that.. it was one delicious plate of noodle.. even by writing those post, I wished I could go there again tomorrow haha..

though the price was quite expensive for a portion of noodle.. I believed that it was worth every Rupiah I spent.. the toppings were generous, the portion was huge and most of all, it was delicious.. I heart you :)

Billie Chick

it was Sunday morning, I had planned to meet an old friend to have breakfast together.. she is currently working in Singapore, and only spent a weekend in Jakarta.. luckily, between our packed schedule (I had to work during that weekend), we managed to sneak a breakfast meeting.. like I've always said, meeting an old friend is like a vitamins in life.. they brought stories and joy to be shared with you.. I remember laughing the whole time during our brunch..

it has actually become sort of a habit every time she visits Jakarta.. especially when it was just over the weekend, we will meet for brekfast or brunch.. as our houses were quite close, we usually picked somewhere near.. unfortunately, the options were very limited that we almost always ended up eating in Bakmi Alok.. this time, we kinda hoped to find some place new and thanks God, we found Billie Chick, which was opened from 8.30 in the morning.. she even gave me a high-five for finally found a new place haha..

actually, Bille Chick has opened for quite a while, but I haven't got the chance to visit.. I heard that they served delicious food.. the waiter told us that the food was not ready until 9.00 a.m so we ordered our drinks first and both of us needed coffee haha.. Hot Cappuccinno (Rp21,900) and Hot French Vanilla Latte (Rp21,900) were our choices.. the cappucinno tasted just okay for me.. but it was a good way to start the day.. I didn't try the vanilla latte, but my friend finished it til the last drop, so I supposed it was also good.. the presentation is very cute :)

for the breakfast, I picked Cheese Meat Fries (Rp17,900), she picked French Soup (Rp18,500) and we added Grilled Chicken Salad (Rp19,900) to share.. the soup was awesome, it was really delicious.. I loved it, but I thought I wouldn't be able to finish as it was very thick.. my fries was lovely.. french fries topped with bolognaisse meat sauce and melted cheese, all the fat in one bowl haha.. it was delicious and very yummy.. our salad came in a very appetizing look, and tasted as good as it looked.. the dressing was a bit sweet, I think they add a little Asian taste to it.. it was good and refreshing :)

overall, it was a good meal, a cozy place and a really nice friend.. such a perfect way to start a day.. wish I could do it everyday :)

Areli Coffee House

after seeing their bright signboard for quite a while, finally I got the chance to try Areli Coffee House.. it's weekday night, bf and I were looking for a nice place to have a light dinner and talk.. the place was not crowded when we arrived, only one table was occupied.. unluckily, the only table occupied was filled with around ten young adults, who happened to talk and laugh loudly.. it kinda ruins the coziness the place offered..

the place was not too big, but very welcoming.. covered in wood wall, floor and ceiling, accompanied with wooden furniture and rather dimmed light, it gave a warm and welcoming feeling.. I fell in love instantly.. looking at the menu, it was dominated with drinks, with only a few choices of food.. fortunately, we were not too hungry..

I decided to have hot latte - regular (Rp22,000) since it was a coffee shop after all, so I thought I must try their coffee.. bf picked avocado mix (Rp18,000) based on my influence haha.. it didn't take too long for our drinks to arrive.. his avocado mix tasted nice, a mixture of avocado juice, chocolate milk and coffee.. it's not overly sweet and was a perfect combination for my tongue.. my latte arrived in a very cute appearance.. apparently, the barista made some art for my latte.. I loved it.. though the latte tasted just okay, it successfully made me happy haha.. I'm such an easy girl on cute stuffs..
for dinner, bf picked mie kangkung goreng terasi (Rp22,000).. it came in a small portion, to his disappointment, but very appealing.. stir-fried thick noodle, mixed with water spinach, scrambled egg and shrimps.. yummy.. it tasted really good, that I kept on taking his meal haha.. the spiciness level was enough and I really liked it..

I did not order any meal for me, since I was trying to skip dinner.. however, looking at their cake selection, I just could not resist.. so I gave up.. see, how unfaithful and inconsistent person I am when it's related to cakes haha.. looking at their best selling menu, we decided to try their oreo Mille crêpe (Rp28,000) as suggested by the waiter.. Mille crêpe is French cake made from many crepe layers.. as you can see, it was very appetizing.. and it tasted just as good as it looked.. I loved it so much.. the crepes were soft, filled with cream and chocolate in between layers, made me just can't stop eating.. another plus point was it's not overly sweet.. it was just great..

overall, Areli Coffee House offers a warm and cozy ambiance to hang out and have small talks.. good coffee, great food and wonderful dessert were just too good to be passed..

Lomie Kangkung Cucu Pinangsia

it was one of the oldest restaurant I have ever known around my neighborhood.. it is said that they had opened their restaurant since 1945.. the restaurant itself is called Lomie Kangkung Cucu Pinangsia.. the noodle used here is yellow noodle than poured with thick brown sauce.. I don't really know about the history behind Lomie Kangkung Pinangsia as it is quite different than any other lomie I've known.. oh well, though I don't know much about the history, I'm quite thankful to know their food.. here's how it looked..

introducing, Lomie Kangkung Special (Rp26,000).. well, it doesn't look that appetizing ya? haha.. underneath those thick brown sauce was yellow noodles mixed with water spinach then topped with grilled pork.. and it came in a huge portion.. adding a little lime juice and chili before stirring would make it even better.. the thick brown sauce tasted dominantly sweet but not too overpowering.. for me, adding the lime juice balanced the sauce sweetness.. it is very savory and goes really well with the noodle and water spinach that I like it so much.. adding pickles is another option to balance the sauce sweetness, like my mom always does.. the noodle is chewy, not mushy.. the best part of this dish is the grilled pork.. it was crunchy outside and tender inside, just the way I liked it..

it's how they looked in half portion (I shared a portion with mom).. see those peeking water spinach and grilled pork? yum yum.. I supposed we have a complete dish here.. you have carbohydrate, greens and meat.. all in one plate.. :)

Saung Greenville

had a lovely new year lunch with family at Saung Greenville.. it's a quite famous restaurant near our house, known for the seafood cooks.. my mom invited her friends, so there were eight adults and one little girl.. we ordered a lot of food haha.. it's new year, anyway.. here comes the review..

as an appetizer, we ordered seafood rolls (Rp30,000) consisted of five small springrolls filled with seafood, served with bangkok sauce.. it was still hot and crunchy when served, which makes it tasted really good.. however, I think it was too expensive for such a small roll..

we ordered tiram goreng telur (Rp30,000), an oyster oyster omelette served with fried garlic and wan sui leaves.. it was one of the favorite dish here and I love it.. oyster and eggs are a good match.. they tasted well together..

eating in a seafood restaurant won't be complete if you do not order fish.. so we ordered ikan kue bakar (Rp115,000/kg).. the fish we got was 0,71kg and was enough for the eight of us.. the fish itself was fresh, tender and juicy.. however, the sauce was just ordinary, nothing was really special.. I have to eat with lots of sambal terasi (Rp3,000) to make it better haha..

not enough, we ordered kerang bambu saus padang (Rp30,000).. it was bamboo shell cooked with spicy Padang sauce.. the spicy Padang sauce here was not too spicy, though.. well, perhaps it was due to the high price of chili.. the portion was so small that we have to limit each person only to eat one shell..

for the vegetable, we ordered kangkung lombok cah terasi (Rp25,000).. it was kangkung from Lombok, which was larger in size compare to other kangkung, cooked in terasi sauce.. I think this dish should be spicy and mouth-watering.. however, I found it was rather bland.. the terasi was kinda tasteless.. the kangkung was large and crunchy, though..

lastly, but the best was kepiting lada hitam (Rp230,000/kg).. it was FINGER-LICKING GOOD.. I literally lick my finger to eat the blackpepper sauce.. the crab was fresh and sweet.. it's kinda hard to eat crab, though.. but I have my little brother to open crab's shell :) the crab was huge, we got 1,36kg.. it was the best dish of the lunch.. can I have some more, please? *puppy eyes*

I ordered iced honey lemon (Rp14,000) for drink.. well, it was a mixture of honey and lemon juice.. a little too sweet for me, since the honey was almost a quarter of the glass.. but still delicious.. and honey is good for your health, right? haha.. *excuse*

Saung Greenville offers variety of seafood with a premium price.. for me, the most worthy dish was the black pepper crab.. oh, the price for rice here was Rp6,000 per portion and hot tea was Rp3,000 per glass.. there's a promotion using Standard Chartered credit card for 25% during weekdays and 15% during weekends..

I would definitely recommend you to come and taste the CRAB :)

Gerobak Betawi

there's this new betawi restaurant near my house (located in Taman Ratu area, in front of Siaw A Tjiap).. the place seems quite cozy with dominant wooden furniture.. the place is not too big.. you can choose between smoking and non-smoking area.. of course, we chose the non smoking area.. the restaurant serves Indonesia food, with specialties including mie goreng nyemek, bubur ayam and rawon.. well, for a quick lunch with bf, we tried the mie goreng nyemek (Rp17k), tahu telor (Rp15k) and tumis kangkung (Rp7.5k)..

I love the mie goreng nyemek.. it's actually fried noodle but served with a little think sauce.. that's why it's called nyemek, which means a little wet in Javanese.. the noodle is cooked in Javanese style with a hint of sweetness.. basically, I'm a noodle fans, so of course I'm loving that dish :)

next, we had tahu telor which was chopped tofu fried with egg added with vegetables and red sauce.. the tahu telor I have known has a thick brown sauce made from petis udang.. however, this one is kinda different.. the sauce is very light and a little spicy.. I think it's similar to asinan bogor's sauce.. a new and unique taste for me and I enjoy every bite I had..

last, we had tumis kangkung.. and a bit disappointing since I don't like.. dunno why.. it is edible, but I don't think I will order that again if I came back.. it's a little tasteless and the portion is adequate for only one person (it's only Rp7.5k anyway)..

so, will I come back? I think I will.. they have a lot of different Indonesia traditional menu that are waiting to be tasted.. I will try the chicken porridge next time :D

The Bee's House

a few weeks ago.. okay, admit that I haven't post anything lately.. too busy with work.. (excuses.. excuses).. back to post.. a few weeks ago, I had a dinner with two friends.. the vitamins of my life.. at The Bee's House.. it's actually a quite new restaurant near our houses.. one of my friend had tried this before and recommended it.. so there we went.. then a few weeks later, I also went there with bf and had the same main course but tried different dessert.. the restaurant provided many variety of food, including risotto, pasta, steak, nasi goreng and so on..

Well, this is my choice of dinner.. it's called German Style Beef Sausage (Rp24k).. it's a big beef sausage drenched in barbecue sauce, along with mashed potato, salad and some sauteed cabbage underneath.. I heart it.. the beef sausage is not as big as it seen.. it's just the right portion for me.. I love the tenderness of the beef and the crunchiness outside.. I also love the sauteed cabbage.. though at first, I thought it's unusual.. the mashed potato is kinda too mashed.. so it's like potato porridge, but still edible.. the salad is too small that you can finish it with a few bites..

My friends ordered this seafood and chicken risotto (Rp25k each).. which I heard quite delicious.. though kinda small portion.. it's served with original parmesan cheese, which was a good thing.. I tried a bite and like it.. it's more than edible, though not quite outstanding.. I'm gonna try this some other time..

On my first visit there with my friends, we shared the Blackforest Pancake (around Rp20k, I think).. it's a two-stack-pancake drenched in dark chocolate sauce and choco  chips then served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.. the pancake is fluffy.. the portion is not too big.. which I like for dessert.. since I can't eat too much sweets.. this is just right for me.. I love to eat the hot pancake with vanilla ice cream.. *drooling drooling drooling*

On the next visit with my bf, we tried Coffee Cream Pancake (around Rp20k too I think).. it's another two-stack-pancake drenched in coffee, chocolate sauce and cream then served with mocha ice cream.. which I LOVE so much.. I'm a coffee lover and definitely can't resist the pancake + coffee + chocolate + mocha for sure :) I kinda think that I'm addicted to this dessert.. I want some more, please :)

Overall, I think this place offers some great menus with a reasonable price.. the place is quite cozy though the smoking and non-smoking area are not separated well.. you can still smell the smoke even when you're sitting in the non-smoking area.. the waiters and waitresses are nice and helpful.. I'm definitely coming back :)
