Warung Wong Solo

Today, I'm taking you to experience Mid-Javanese cuisine brought nicely by Warung Wong Solo.. This small eatery, located in Serpong area, serves cuisine originated from Solo, Central Java.. The eatery was very simple, a home/office turned into a -hopefully- decent restaurant, filled with basic chairs and tables..

On every table, you will find a small tray filled with tempe and tahu bacem 2k each, which looked very appetizing.. See those brown color, it was the result of boiling tempe and tahu along with spices and palm sugar, creating a sweet and savory taste.. Yums! A good sign for their upcoming main courses.. That day we ordered nasi liwet biasa 15k, nasi langgi 19k and kupat tahu biasa 12k..

Nasi liwet is traditional Javanese rice dish cooked in coconut milk and chicken broth, then served with chicken cooked in coconut milk, telor pindang and labu siam.. Personally, I think a good nasi liwet lies in the rice taste and this one was fragrant perfect.. The condiments were another treats.. I loved my labu siam which was perfectly cooked in coconut milk broth, creating a unique and addictive taste..

Nasi langgi is also traditional Javanese rice dish, cooked in coconut milk, but served with different condiments, this one had spicy potato chips, telur pindang, sambal ati and gepuk (shredded beef patty).. This is my companion's pick and I only taste a little bit of it.. He said it was just mediocre and wished he had ordered the nasi liwet instead.. I gave credit to the spicy potato chips though, they were delicious!

Kupat tahu is another traditional dish consisted of ketupat, fried tofu, cabbage, beansprout, peanuts and bakwan (fried veggies patty), drenched in sweet-sour-spicy sauce.. The sauce tasted similar to pempek sauce.. This was maknyus *quoting the famous Pak Bondan*.. Loving every bit of this dish.. The hot, newly fried tofu and bakwan somehow went really well with that brown sauce.. It was unique and definitely not something you would find commonly..

I guessed I did have a nice lunch experiencing those Javanese cuisine.. Definitely will come back for more thanks to the yummy dishes and smart prices..

Ah Poong

I am amazed how Indonesian people can be really creative.. specifically on the culinary business, we are lucky to have such bright people running the business.. Ah Poong is one of those ideas, which makes this place a must-visit when you're around Sentul.. a smart fusion of traditional floating market and Eat & Eat, I welcome you, Ah Poong..

the food stalls were too many to be counted that we were so confused deciding what to order.. my mom was the first one to made up her mind with sangu tutug oncom (Rp30,000).. a Sundanese dish which mainly consisted rice mixed with oncom then combined with various condiments.. hers included empal (Sundanese sweet beef), fried tofu, fried tempeh, spinach crackers, crispy salted fish and boiled vegetables, and of course, sambal terasi.. it tasted good, as my mom is a huge fan of oncom, this dish definitely matched her culinary preference..

I went with safe options by picking bakso Aheng campur spesial (Rp35,500).. Tangerang style meatballs accompanied with noodle.. other than meatballs, you can choose other fillings, including beef slices or beef innards, all based on your appearance.. I prefer pure beef and meatballs in my soup.. and taste wise, it was good! the broth was so tasty, the meatballs were great and the beef were tender! I praise the chili which making the whole dish complete.. on the down turn, the noodle was overcooked and mushy..

my brother, after really hard time deciding his lunch, picked nasi gudeg (Rp34,500) and siomay Bandung (Rp5,000 per piece).. a complete set of Jogjakarta's special dish, including chicken cooked in coconut milk, pindang tofu, krecek and chili then topped with crackers.. the look was really pleasing in the eye, but not the taste.. it was rather tasteless and failed to satisfy my brother's big tummy.. his siomay Bandung which consisted of 6 pieces -yes, he was that hungry- unfortunately was another miss.. the siomay tasted pure flour, I can't taste any fish in it and the peanut sauce was not helping.. he was really disappointed..

by the time we finished our lunch, it was raining quite heavily thus making us stay longer.. it was actually a really nice atmosphere, the weather was cool and the sound of raindrops on the river was relaxing.. however, it's just really easy to be tempted by the stalls that we decided to have a bowl of mixed ronde (Rp14,000).. ronde is Indonesian style of glutinous rice balls served with ginger soup.. it tasted sweet and warm.. the ronde was chewy and in a perfect texture and the ginger soup was tummy-warming..

overall, it was a nice family experience at Ah Poong.. the food was somehow a mix of enjoyment and disappointment but perhaps it's just us making the wrong decision.. I will definitely come back for mind relaxing :)

Kopitiam Oey

one Saturday, I checked in Sentul in my long-forgotten facebook account.. to be specific, I checked in at Kopitiam Oey, Sentul.. and my friend directly commented on how far I can go for a cup of coffee.. so here's the story..

well, it was a lovely Saturday and my mom suddenly come out nowhere with an idea to go to Sentul area.. I honestly don't know what kind of TV shows she watched that inspired her but anyhow, we ended up driving our car to south of Jakarta.. it was still very early in the morning and we haven't had our morning coffee.. I've been willing to take her to try Kopitiam Oey for their strong coffee, since my mom is a coffee expert, imho.. so when we saw the sign heading to Kopitiam Oey, I just could not resist to park and drop by.. located inside Taman Budaya Sentul, the place was easily noticed.. consistently bringing the old China town atmosphere with wooden chairs, Chinese ornaments and tempo doeloe menu, I found this place unique and cozy at the same time..

so my mom ordered the classic kopi soesoe Indotjina (Rp13,000) while I'm trying to be adventurous by ordering chai atawa teh boemboe India (Rp16,000) with a portion of roti prata susu pisang coklat keju (Rp20,000).. the coffee was enjoyable, bitter with a strong taste of caffeine.. definitely my mom's kind of coffee.. while my chai was literally milk tea with various herbs, including ginger.. and turned out not my favorite.. not that it tasted bad, but I'm not a ginger fan, thus this was definitely not my kind of drink.. my mom ended up finishing my glass.. the prata bread with all those condiments was really appetizing and tasted just as good as it looked.. however, after a few bites, I felt quite overwhelmed since a lot of different taste was bursting in my mouth.. a tad too sweet for my liking but love the prata bread..

Umaku

allow me to interrupt the Australia's thread with this one post.. actually, I have visited Umaku before I went to Australia but sorry, had no chance to write a review about it.. so here we go.. I have heard about the good name of Umaku selling fresh sushi in an affordable price.. as I am such a huge fan of sushi, I was really curious and finally dragged my mom to try it.. Umaku Alam Sutra was located in a small office-home located right in front of the famous Flavor Bliss..

here's what we ordered.. wakame salad (Rp26,000), scallop grill roll (Rp29,000), spider roll (Rp39,000), mixed mushroom makura (Rp10,000) and two cups of ocha (Rp5,000 each).. we were hungry and it's lunch.. first, we were given a free bowl of edamame.. oohh, I love those healthy beans.. the hot ocha was clear green, tasted light and nice.. I really love the cups that I wanted to take them home..

a few moments later, come our orders.. the wakame salad came in such a small portion, I did expect more.. it tasted quite good with fresh condiments.. I think I still prefer Sushi Tei's wakame salad though.. the sushi rolls each consisted of four pieces.. spider roll's main ingredients is unagi and I love the freshness of the unagi.. it was covered in sweet brown sauce and it was good.. I put a high expectation on scallop grill roll but turned out that it was not my favorite.. I can only taste sweetness in the whole sushi until I wondered whether or not it's the true taste.. finally, we had mixed mushroom makura which was grilled mixed mushrooms with garlic.. this one tasted really unique, I have never had any dish similar to it.. the mushrooms were cooked perfectly and tasted quite nice..

can you believe that after all those stuffs, our bellies were not satisfied yet? yes and so we added karai ramen (Rp36,000) to our table.. it was one of the recommended dish from Umaku and I have no regrets at all ordering it.. it came in a very appetizing way with the red spicy soup and generous fillings.. it was not as spicy as it looked, but it did taste great! I love everything about this dish.. the veggies were fresh accompanied with tender beef chunks, sliced fish balls and wakame.. a bowl of satisfaction :)

Umaku was kind enough by not only providing us the complimentary edamame but also a complimentary dessert of konyaku jelly.. it was really refreshing in the middle of a hot day and completely a nice treat for our lunch.. talking about bringing the best service to the customers..

overall, I had a satisfying dining experience at Umaku.. the taste was good and the price was affordable.. though the location was not quite friendly with where I live, I may go the distance for their karai ramen.. ending the post with a very cute loyalty card from Umaku :)

Iga Penyet Warung Teko...

baru pertama kali nih nyobain Iga Penyet Teko.. dan itu pun gara-gara si iga penyet ini baru buka di sebrang Rumah Sakit Omni di Alam Sutra (my dad was being hospitalized there, but that's another story).. jadi karena ade gw yang dateng dr SG niat banget pingin makan iga penyet, jadilah kita pergi makan kesana.. actually, gw ga tau ya sejarahnya si iga penyet Teko dan Leko dan ga tau juga bedanya apa actually.. kayanya sih most of the menu sama ya dengan signature dish iga penyet..

so of course, qta pesen si iga penyet.. scara itu signature dish gitu.. qta pesen yang pedes.. as you can see.. terdiri dari beberapa potong iga sapi yang empuuuukk banget dan gampang lepas dari tulangnya gitu..

overall, I had a nice dining experience here.. harganya sih lumayan above average ya.. but i guess worth the taste, asal jangan tiap hari aja :P
